Buena Vista - Stay Guide and FAQs

Buena Vista Ocean View Apartments: Your Stay Guide

Welcome to Buena Vista Ocean View Apartments in Santa Teresa, on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula. We offer two-bedroom ocean-view apartments and a one-bedroom studio with a garden and jungle setting. All our accommodation includes a kitchen, air conditioning in the sleeping areas, Wi-Fi and access to our shared swimming pool.

Our hillside location puts you within walking distance of the beach, surfing, restaurants and local shops. The approach includes a steep uphill section, so please read the access information before booking.

Choosing Your Accommodation

What is the difference between the apartments and the studio?

Our apartments have two bedrooms and ocean views. Our one-bedroom studio accommodates up to two guests and has a garden and jungle setting without an ocean view.

The studio includes a queen-size bed, a private bathroom, a kitchen, air conditioning, and indoor and outdoor tables. Like our apartment guests, you have access to the shared swimming pool.

Please review the photographs, bed arrangements and maximum occupancy of the specific accommodation you choose.

Do all accommodations have kitchens and air conditioning?

Yes. Each accommodation has a kitchen for preparing your own meals and air conditioning in the sleeping areas.

Apartments A and B are on the top floor. They have larger balconies and an additional air-conditioning unit in the living area. Layouts and amenities vary, so please check your selected listing for the full details.

Does every accommodation have an ocean view?

No. All our two-bedroom apartments have ocean views, but the studio does not. If an ocean view is a priority, choose one of our two-bedroom apartments.

What is the minimum guest age?

We welcome guests aged 12 and over. We cannot accommodate children under 12.

Please include everyone staying with you in your reservation and respect the maximum occupancy of your selected accommodation.

Location, Arrival and Parking

Where is Buena Vista located?

We are on Calle Castillo in Santa Teresa, on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula. Our property sits on a hillside above the main road, near the beach access and the La Lora surf area.

Can I walk to the beach?

Yes. The pedestrian beach access is opposite the junction of Calle Castillo and Santa Teresa’s main road.

You can walk to the beach from Buena Vista, but the return includes a steep uphill section approximately 75 metres long. Please keep this in mind when planning your stay.

Do I need a vehicle to stay at Buena Vista?

No. Many guests explore the nearby beach, restaurants and shops on foot. You can also arrange transport for outings farther away.

Whether you walk or use transport, please plan for the steep approach to the property, especially when arriving with luggage.

What kind of vehicle can drive up to the property?

Driving up our steep concrete approach requires a high-clearance 4x4, an ATV or a suitable side-by-side vehicle. A standard rental car is not suitable.

Many guests arrive by 4x4 taxi or on foot. If you plan to drive up, contact us beforehand to confirm your vehicle’s suitability and discuss your arrival arrangements.

Is parking available for the apartments?

Yes. Our apartments have access to covered on-site parking by advance reservation only, subject to availability and our explicit confirmation.

Booking an apartment does not automatically reserve a parking space. If you need parking, please contact us before booking so we can confirm availability.

Is parking available for the studio?

No. The studio has no on-site parking, and a parking space cannot be reserved for this accommodation.

Public roadside parking may be available nearby, but spaces are not reserved or guaranteed. If you arrive by car, you will need to arrange parking off the property.

Is Buena Vista suitable if I have difficulty walking uphill?

The approach includes a steep concrete section approximately 75 metres long. Walking up requires good mobility and a reasonable level of fitness, particularly when carrying luggage.

If you have difficulty with slopes or have other access requirements, please contact us before booking to discuss the approach and your selected accommodation. Our hillside location may not suit your needs.

Can you help arrange an ATV or side-by-side rental?

Yes. We can help coordinate a rental with an independent provider, including delivery and collection at Buena Vista and basic operating instructions from the rental company.

We do not operate the rental service ourselves. Availability, prices, requirements and rental terms are set by the provider.

Wi-Fi and Working Remotely

What internet connections are available?

We have three separate internet connections to provide redundancy:

  • Starlink: approximately 300 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload.

  • Kölbi fibre: approximately 250 Mbps download and 200 Mbps upload.

  • Telecable fibre: approximately 250 Mbps download and 200 Mbps upload.

These are indicative speeds for the individual connections, not guaranteed speeds at your device. The three connections provide alternatives if one fails; their speeds should not be added together.

Actual performance varies with network conditions, usage, Wi-Fi signal and your equipment.

What happens if an internet connection fails?

Our “Buena Vista Global” Wi-Fi network uses Aruba enterprise access points and a WatchGuard system configured to switch automatically between internet connections if one fails.

This setup reduces reliance on a single provider, although a connection change may briefly interrupt a call, VPN session or other online activity. Uninterrupted service cannot be guaranteed.

If your work depends on a particular VPN configuration or network requirement, contact us before booking so we can discuss it.

Does the internet have backup power?

Yes. Our network equipment is connected to APC uninterruptible power supplies and two Jackery battery backups. These help keep the internet equipment running during a power interruption.

Backup duration depends on conditions, and both power and internet service remain subject to availability.

Does backup power supply the entire accommodation?

No. Our backup power supports internet equipment and emergency lighting. It does not supply the entire accommodation or keep air conditioning, kitchen appliances and other equipment running during an outage.

Where can I work in the apartments?

Our ocean-view apartments offer tables on their private balconies, balcony sofas and indoor living areas with ocean views through sliding glass doors.

If you prefer to work in a bedroom, a small desk and chair may be available by advance request. Please contact us before arrival to confirm.

Where can I work in the studio?

The studio has an indoor dining/work table and an outdoor table suitable for working. It has a garden and jungle setting rather than an ocean view.

Ocean Views, Sunsets and Nature

Can I see the sun setting into the ocean?

Yes, during much of the year and when skies are clear. From our ocean-view apartments, the sun is generally visible setting into the ocean from around mid-August to mid-May.

The exact view depends on the date, weather and apartment. You can enjoy it from the balconies, with views also extending into living areas, kitchens and some bedrooms.

If seeing the sun reach the ocean horizon is especially important to you, contact us before booking so we can advise on your dates and apartment choice.

What are the ocean views like during the rainy season?

Rain moving across the ocean, changing cloud formations and occasional distant lightning can make the views particularly memorable.

Weather varies, and clear sunsets are not guaranteed. The changing skies are part of the experience of staying here throughout the year.

Can I see the moon setting over the ocean?

At certain times, yes. Depending on the moon’s phase, position and the weather, you may see it setting over the ocean from an ocean-view apartment. Under some conditions, the moon can appear pink, orange or red near the horizon.

Moonset times change throughout the lunar cycle, and not every moonset happens before sunrise. If you would like to plan around this experience, contact us in advance.

Can I see the sun rising out of the ocean?

No. Santa Teresa faces west, so our ocean views are oriented towards sunset rather than sunrise. You can still enjoy the changing morning light over the water.

Can I see bioluminescence?

It is occasionally possible in the area, but it is rare and cannot be guaranteed.

If bioluminescence is a priority for your visit, contact us about arranging a dedicated excursion, such as a kayaking tour near Curú Wildlife Refuge. Tour availability and visibility depend on local conditions.

Restaurants, Coffee and Deliveries

Are restaurants and bars within walking distance?

Yes. Nearby options include:

  • A beachfront restaurant and full bar, approximately 400 metres away.

  • A surf-oriented restaurant, bar and nightlife venue, approximately 300 metres away.

  • An Argentinian-style grill restaurant and full bar, approximately 350 metres away.

The return walk to Buena Vista includes the steep uphill approach. Ask us for current recommendations and opening hours during your stay.

Are there coffee shops nearby?

Yes. You can walk to nearby coffee options, or prepare coffee in your accommodation and enjoy a slower start to the day.

Can I order food or groceries for delivery?

Many local restaurants offer delivery directly. We can also help you contact a local service provider to purchase groceries, run errands and deliver items to our parking area.

Availability, delivery arrangements and charges depend on the provider. Please confirm the delivery point when placing your order.

Pool, Housekeeping and Water

Is the swimming pool private?

No. Our swimming pool is shared with other guests at Buena Vista. Both apartment and studio guests have access.

Is housekeeping included?

Yes. Housekeeping is provided every fourth day, except Sundays. We do not provide housekeeping on Sundays.

Can I arrange more frequent housekeeping?

Yes. Let us know your preferred frequency, and we can arrange additional housekeeping for an extra charge, subject to availability. Sunday service is not available.

Is laundry service available?

Wash, dry and fold laundry service may be arranged for an additional charge. Contact us for current prices and arrangements.

Do you have backup water storage?

Yes. We have five 1,000-litre tanks, providing a total water storage capacity of 5,000 litres.

During an interruption to the town’s water supply, we manage these reserves carefully and typically release water from one tank at a time. The duration of the backup depends on occupancy, water use and the length of the interruption; it is not a guaranteed number of days.

Planning and Booking Your Stay

Can I book a longer stay?

Yes, subject to availability. Enter your preferred dates on this website to see available accommodation, applicable prices and booking terms.

Kitchens, work areas and access to laundry services can make a longer stay more convenient.

What should I check before booking?

Please review your selected accommodation’s photographs, bed arrangements, maximum occupancy, amenities, house rules, cancellation terms and total price.

In particular, remember that:

  • We welcome guests aged 12 and over.

  • All our two-bedroom apartments have ocean views; the studio does not.

  • Access includes a steep uphill section.

  • Apartment parking requires a separate, confirmed advance reservation.

  • The studio has no on-site parking.

  • Backup power supports internet equipment and emergency lighting, not the entire accommodation.

Contact us before booking if you have questions about access, need parking, require a particular work setup or want help choosing an apartment for its views.

How do I check availability and book?

Use the accommodation search on this website ( www.oceanviewsantateresa.com ) and enter your dates and guest count. Compare the available options, review the full price and booking terms, and select the accommodation that suits your stay.

We look forward to welcoming you to Buena Vista and helping you enjoy Santa Teresa.
